A little better view of the squirrel. You can see the extra skin between the front and back legs that allows them to glide through the air.

The squirrel eventually came all the way out of the nest box and chased the woodpecker off the box.

Woodpecker and flying squirrel encounter.

I know I made this photo too small. I see pink in there but I don't know if it is the inside of the squirrels mouth or whether the woodpecker actually stabbed the little guy.

I'm going to try to watch the box tonight and see if I see a flying squirrel come out.

Someone on another forum identified my mystery baby in the nest box as a flying squirrel. After looking at several websites, I think they might be right.

Anyway, the woodpecker is not ready to give up on the nest box yet. I saw quite a little confrontation today with the woodpecker pulling stuff out of the box and the critter inside going after the woodpecker.

For the past several days, I've seen a red-bellied woodpecker pecking at the opening of an old nest box (previously used by titmice. It is at least ten feet up in an oak. Today when I looked up there, I saw a
tiny nose of something poking out. It sure didn't seem like it could be baby woodpeckers yet, so I took a photo and blew it up.

I'm not sure if it is squirrel or mouse, but from this angle it looks
pretty cute.
